Martin Gethin in IBF final eliminator at Walsall
British lightweight champion Martin Gethin is one step away from a world title bid after securing a final eliminator for the IBF belt.
The Walsall fighter will meet Panamanian Ammeth Diaz in the West Midlands on Friday May 31 for the mandatory slot at champion Miguel Vazquez.
The pair will meet at Walsall Town Hall, live on BoxNation, where Gethin won the British title with victory over Londoner Ben Murphy in January.
The 29-year-old won a spot in the IBF rankings by winning their International belt with an 11th-round stoppage of Carl Johanneson last September.
Gethin said: "This is a massive opportunity for me. I won the British Title in January and now I'm one step away from a shot at the IBF crown.
"It's a dream come true. I'd like to thank Frank Warren for all his hard work in getting me this fight in my hometown and my manager and trainer, Errol Johnson, for all his support.
"I won't let anybody down. He's coming into my backyard and I'll show him what I'm all about. The Quiet Man is going to silence the world."
Diaz has already boxed for the full IBF crown against Vazquez at the start of last year and lost on points, after climbing off the canvas in the sixth round.
That's one of 11 defeats on the 29-year-old's record but he also has 31 victories, 22 inside the distance, and has held the WBC Latino and WBA Fedecentro belts.
Frank Warren's match-maker Dean Powell said: "I'm delighted for Martin. He's the British champion and has a world ranking and this is his time.
"I know the whole of Walsall, the Black Country, and England will be behind him. He's a quiet, unassuming guy out of the ring but in it, he's a warrior.
"He deserves this chance and that's why we have worked so hard to get it."
The show, titled 'Ready To Silence The World,' features another Walsall fighter ready to make an impact on the international stage.
Midlands cruiserweight champion and English title No 1 contender Christopher Keane will take on a foreign opponent over 10 rounds.
Former British welterweight title challenger Jason Welborn, from Rowley Regis, will also box the first time since his defeat to Frankie Gavin in January.
Imported from Manchester for the night will be Ronnie Heffron, looking to bounce back from his Commonwealth welterweight title defeat to Denton Vassell.
Stafford's Grant Cunningham, the undefeated middleweight from Moss Pit, supports on the under-card alongside two exciting fighters making their debuts.
Wolverhampton's Des Bowater reached two Midlands finals at super featherweight in the ABA national amateur competition, boxing for Wodensborough ABC.
West Bromwich's Tom Stokes is the brother of fellow welterweight Josh, who won a junior ABA national amateur title in 2011 representing the same club.
Tickets for 'Ready To Silence The World' are priced at £40 and £75 and are available now from Walsall Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900.
The show will be live and exclusive on BoxNation on Sky Channel 437 and Virgin Channel 546. Join at www.boxnation.com.
