Walsall Wood ABC girl scores ABA glory
Lauren Johnson brought a female ABA national title to Walsall Wood Amateur Boxing Club with a first round stoppage on her competitive debut.
The Wolverhampton-based fighter made it to yesterday's final without a fight through a series of byes at 75kg in Class C, for girls who have had up to five bouts.
The 26-year-old painter and decorator made the short journey to Cannock High School to face the undefeated Natalie McGauclin, from High Wycombe ABC.
And McGauclin was blown out of the water by a damaging series of assaults from the opening bull, as Johnson flew out of the blocks in the opening session.
McGauclin tried to trade and came off far worse as her exposed chin was punished time and again, rocking her head back and forcing an early standing count.
She was allowed to continue but failed to cover up and was plummeled in the same fashion yet again, with the referee stepping in to call an end to the fight.
Victory inside the first minute was a fantastic result for the novice combatant, who only took up the sport earlier this year and could now box for England.
Johnson is only the second female to represent Walsall Wood ABC after Lauren Lang, who reached the semi-final of the same competition this time last year.
