Paige Goodyear will be spending today at Team GB after trainer Darren McDermott landed her a place at a training day in Sheffield - after just one fight.

Goodyear made her winning amateur debut last weekend on a Beartown ABC club show in Congelton, Cheshire, beating home fighter Olivier Craig.

The 11-year-old from Wren's Nest was boxing at 45kg for Brooklands ABC, the club run out of McDermott's gym at his home in Woodsetton, Dudley.

McDermott, 34, was an accomplished pro and an English middleweight champion who also competed for the British and Commonwealth titles.

'The Black Country Bodysnatcher' had to retire two years ago after suffering bleeding to the brain through a training injury, which required surgery.

'Macca' started his own club last year and is excited by the potential of Goodyear, who next boxes on a Wodensborough ABC club show on Thursday.

When she next steps through the ropes, she will be buoyed by the experience of joining 38 girls for the training camp at the English Institute of Sport.

McDermott said: "Paige is a very clever boxer, she's not a fighter, she gets on her toes and reacts sharply, keeping her range nice and long.

"She's a lot sharper than I was, put it that way! She hits hard, as well, I can feel that whenever we are on the pads.

"She's got a bit of a dig on her and it's all good experience for her, she's got a fight this week and I want her to stay busy.

"She's 12 months too young to go into the ABAs this time but she will win a title next year, I guarantee you."

Brooklands ABC won a fight for the first time in a national competition earlier this month through Kingswinford's Mitchell Stevens.

The 19-year-old hairdresser made it through to the second round of the Clubs for Young People championships in Class C.

Stevens ran Solihull's Ryan Kelly, who boxes in the Midlands final tomorrow, close in a 17-17 draw but lost on countback.
