Civic to stage British title rematch
Wolverhampton will stage the much-anticipated British cruiserweight title rematch between Enzo Maccarinelli and Shane McPhilbin.
Wolverhampton will stage the much-anticipated British cruiserweight title rematch between Enzo Maccarinelli and Shane McPhilbin.
Maccarinelli controversially took the belt from McPhilbin at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in a points win on March 23.
Now the two will do it all again at the same venue on June 22, after the British Boxing Board of Control ordered a rematch.
In the first fight, hometown timekeeper Martin Fallon rang the bell to end the first round 47 seconds early, with Maccarinelli in trouble.
The challenger was down when the bell rang and got floored again in the third round, with McPhilbin touching the canvas in the 10th.
Fallon has been suspended until next year in the aftermath and the contest will happen again, on Black Country soil, in June.
As a gesture, not only did Maccarinelli happily agree to a rematch, he also demanded that the fight purse be a 50-50 split.
Typically, the champion recieves 60 per cent while the challenger gets a slightly smaller cut, but that will not the case this time.
Frank Warren has, again, submitted the successful bid to stage the contest with his television channel, BoxNation, in mind.
It was the live transmission that left Fallon nowhere to hide last time and led to the most controversial flashpoint in a British ring this year.
