A goal five minutes from time consigned Birmingham to defeat after coming from two goals down to draw level.

Dean Whitehead bundled in Stoke's winner during a breathless 14 minute spell that saw four goals scored.

Blues had gone into the second-half trailing to Robert Huth's strike a minute before the break, with Stoke going further ahead through Ricardo Fuller's curler on 71.

But Alex McLeish's men pulled one back through substitute Keith Fahey's powerful effort on 74, before Cameron Jerome glanced in Blues' equaliser two minutes later.

That looked to be enough for a draw until Whitehead's late winner, poking the ball in after Matthew Etherington's cross deflected into his path off the legs of defender Scott Dann.

It was harsh on Blues, who would have grabbed a third goal had it not been for the heroics of goalkeeeper Asmir Begovic.

Twice Begovic was on hand to keep out long-range efforts from Craig Gardner.
