Birmingham winger Jean Beausejour is expected to be out for a fortnight with a knee injury.
The Chile international, who joined Blues on transfer deadline day, has yet to start a match in the Premier League but was hoping to be in contention for the trip to Arsenal this weekend.
But the £3.3million signing has injured his knee ligament and will be on the sidelines for at least two weeks.
Manager Alex McLeish said: "He came to us half-fit, that's part of the problem when you sign players at the end of the transfer window.
"We have to make sure we don't take any unnecessary risks with him."
But it looks as if McLeish will be able to call upon midfielder Barry Ferguson for some time, who has revealed he is prepared to finish his career at St Andrew's.
The 32-year-old has had a new lease of life under the manager since returning south of the border, after admitting he had gone stale at Glasgow Rangers.
He said: "I love it here. I've got another two years left on my contract now and hopefully I'll see them out.
"I wasn't enjoying my football during the last few months in Scotland. I had to move on from Rangers because I was going pretty stale. I was playing the same teams week in, week out.
"The manager gave me the opportunity to come here and I think I had to prove I could play at this level again.
"I'm enjoying every minute of it. The boys are fantastic, everything about the club is great and I'm enjoying my football."
