Former Aston Villa and England striker Jackie Sewell dies age 89

Sewell scored 40 goals in 145 appearances for Villa between 1955 and 1959 and was a member of the team which defeated Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley to win the FA Cup in 1957.

Born in Whitehaven, Sewell is best known for his time at Notts County where he scored 104 goals in 193 games and helped the club to promotion from Division Three South in 1950.

He joined Sheffield Wednesday the following year for a then record transfer fee of £34,500 and earned six England caps, scoring in the legendary 6-3 defeat to Hungary at Wembley in 1953.

Sewell was signed by then Villa boss Eric Houghton from Wednesday for a fee of £20,000 in December 1955. He netted 18 goals in his first full season as Villa finished in the top half and won the cup and remained a regular in the following two seasons, before being transferred to Hull City in October 1959 following the club's relegation from the top flight.

Following retirement in 1961, he moved to Zambia and took on a player-coach role at City of Lusaka, even making some appearances for fledgling Zambian national team.
