Former Wolverhampton Wolves star and speedway world champion Tai Woffinden said he is "on the mend" in a first update since a serious crash placed him in an induced coma.

Woffinden, 34, suffered serious injuries in a heavy shunt in a race meet in Poland on March 31 and has been receiving treatment in the country with his family.

The former Wolves favourite asked fans to 'bear with him' after the collision with his team-mate while riding for his team Rzeszow. He fractured several bones and injured his chest and was placed in the medically-induced coma.

Woffinden posted a message, accompanied by a selfie, from his hospital bed which read: "Hey guys, turns out my injuries and an induced coma ain’t no joke. I'm on the mend, please bear with me for now.

"I just need a little more time to rest. I’ll update you all later on in the week. Please know how much I appreciate all the love and support from all over the world."

Scunthorpe-born Woffinden crashed into a fence at high speed at the start of the race late last month and was airlifted to hospital shortly afterwards.

His family requested patience and understanding as the racer, a world champion in 2013, 2015 and 2018, set about his recovery.

Woffinden's wife Faye, who lives in Australia but flew to Poland to be by his side, posted on social media earlier this month: "Right now, our hearts are heavy, and we are taking things one moment at a time.

"Please know how deeply grateful we are for your patience, your love, and your support - it truly means the world to us.

"In the midst of this incredibly difficult time, your support reminds us that we are not facing this alone."
