Replaced at half-time, Walsall fell to a 1-0 defeat at MK Dons in September last year and Weir would be forced to wait another three months for his next league start.

When it arrived, Weir seized the chance with both hands, producing a man of the match performance in a 2-1 win at Notts County on New Year's Day.

And reflecting six months on, the Irishman feels that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

"It's a lot to do with confidence as well. I've got all my family, all my friends behind me," he explains.

"I was very down after the MK Dons game but I've got great lads in the dressing room that'll push me on.

"They know they can bring the best out of me."

David Okagbue had a similar experience on his first Walsall start during his loan spell from Stoke City last season.
