Walsall striker Jamille Matt might have only scored four times for Grimsby Town but his final strike for the Mariners has gone down in club folklore.

Matt had joined Grimsby on loan in the summer of 2017, after injury deprived him of the opportunity to lift the League Two play-off trophy with Blackpool at Wembley the previous campaign.

The season started well for Grimsby and Matt scored his first two goals in back-to-back wins over Swindon Town and Barnet respectively to propel them to within touching distance of the play-off spots.

"It was a very good experience. I enjoyed my time there," Matt recalls.

"It was a strange season because we were in and around the play-offs at the start of December and looking like we were going to kick on and challenge.

"I've got fond memories from my time there. It's a very passionate fan base. It's a time and area where everything is geared towards the football club."

Things took a turn for the worse two days before Christmas. A 2-0 defeat at Luton Town ended their four-match unbeaten run and it would take over three months until they tasted victory again.
