Non-league previews: 'We need more support' says Darlaston boss Gill
Dean Gill has called for the community to get behind his Darlaston Town side as they challenge for the Northern One Midlands play-offs.
The Citizens’ largest home attendance so far this season came against Harborough Town in September last year when 288 watched on. But, Darlaston’s home crowds have averaged in the mid 150’s throughout this season so far, which Gill is vying to change.
His side are unbeaten in their last six league games and sit two points adrift of the play-offs ahead of welcoming Boldmere St Michaels tomorrow.
Gill hopes Darlaston can receive a boost in support during the run into the end of the season to help them continue their successful campaign.
He said: “The single biggest disappointment of the last four years, and there are not many, is the fact that we haven’t been able to attract a bigger fan base.
“If you had said to me when we took over what I thought we would have at step four I’d have said between 200, 300 or even 350.
“It is not a criticism of the existing supporters because they are fantastic, but for a myriad of reasons we haven’t been able to engage with new Darlaston Town supporters.
“On the pitch our away record is one of the best in the league and our home record isn’t as good and I think that is accredited to the fact that we have bigger gates away.
“Who doesn’t want to play in front of bigger crowds or a better atmosphere?
“We are making it too easy for teams to come to us and for it to be acceptable.
“And, getting fans in is the major vehicle to remain financially stable.”
Darlaston have won seven league games both at home and away so far this season, but rank higher for their away record than they do for their home results.
Having played one more game than Anstey Nomads who occupy the final play-off spot in fifth, the Citizens are going to have to continue their good form to stay intact.
Asked if he believes his side can achieve a play-off spot, Gill added: “It is definitely achievable and something that we are looking to do. And, we are looking to because why wouldn’t you when it is achievable?
“We are not afraid to be in them and win games, we have learned lots and still are.
“We are working hard and until it is mathematically impossible we will keep trying.”
