Darnell Furlong's looping header in the first half cancelled out Junior Firpo's early opener as it ended honours even at Elland Road.

Leeds are comfortably clear of third in the Championship and are unbeaten in 17 games in the division but Albion went toe-to-toe with Daniel Farke's men in an intriguing clash in the West Yorkshire sunshine.

Mowbray feels the battling display, which delivered on the head coach's promise of attacking at the leaders, can inspire a more attack-minded, confident winning mentality in his troops for the play-off race.

The Albion boss felt his side could not come to Elland Road with a view to defend for a point - and that such an approach would only end in defeat.

"We grew into the game, we were shown stats this week about how they start, how many goals they score in the first 10 minutes and how many they score in the last five or 10 minutes," Mowbray said.

"We were really determined to start fast. They're a good team, a really good team, very well coached with really talented players but I thought we showed what we were about today as the game went on.

"We got braver with the ball, gave them some problems and I'm happy enough with the point."

John Swift, a surprise starter against the leaders, sent a glorious early chance just wide of the left post by the time Firpo nodded in after nine minutes when Baggies goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith gave the ball away and failed to claim a cross.

Albion might have crumbled at a vociferous Elland Road but responded admirably and spent the final 15 minutes of the first half well in the ascendency.

Leeds had no complaints when Furlong looped a header over Illan Meslier from Swift's free-kick six minutes before the interval.

Daniel Farke's Whites came on strong in the second period as substitute Mateo Joseph clipped the crossbar and Dan James fired into the side netting in stoppage time - at which point United have struck winners in their last two games.

Several Leeds crosses and shots in or around the Albion box were repelled as the Baggies defended manfully with a workmanlike attitude.

But Albion had their chances to claim all three points too. Furlong almost doubled his tally for the season with a diving header sent over the top and substitute Tom Fellows failed to make the most of a chance following good work from fellow changes Daryl Dike and Grady Diangana.

"On another day Tom (Fellows) could've ran through and slipped the second one in for us to get the second one and won," the head coach added.

"For me it's about where the team is going. We know we can compete with the best teams in this division home or away. That's what they have to believe every game, so when the other games come along we should only be looking for three points.

"We have to change the mentality and get to that - this is West Bromwich Albion and this is how we play and that we expect to win."
