Whelan, who played 41 times for Villa back in the 2018/2019 campaign as they won promotion back to the Premier League - was the subject of a tweet from a Villa supporter.
The fan was comparing Villa's time in the Championship to the current crop, who drew 2-2 with Liverpool on Wednesday evening.
The Villa supporter posted on X: "I was watching Glenn Whelan on penalties and then the next minute I'm watching Asensio, Rogers, Rashford run at the Holte. Wtf happened."
The former Stoke City and Republic of Ireland midfielder picked up on the post - and fired back at the fan, urging him to not forget the players who helped put Villa back in the top flight.
He said: "Don’t forget Glenn Whelan @35 helped pull your club from one of its darkest days… enjoy Asensio Rogers and Rashford and thank me later."
The midfielder, now 41, spent decades making his name at Stoke City, and joined Villa after making over 300 appearances for the Potters.
He played a further 73 times at Villa Park, before heading to Hearts and Fleetwood, and returned to the EFL with Bristol Rovers following a spell in non-league with Wynthenshaw Amateurs.
