The ex-Wolves boss was dismissed by the club a week before Christmas, amid a dreadful run of form that had left them 19th in the Premier League table.

O'Neil hasn't been linked to other jobs since his Wolves dismissal - but last week became one of the contenders for the vacant Blackburn Rovers job.

The vacancy at Ewood Park has become available after John Eustace left the play-off contenders to join relegation threatened Derby County.

A number of names have been put in the frame for the job, but it is believed O'Neil is now the favourite to potentially land the job.

He has been instilled as the 7/2 with many bookmakers, with reports suggesting he is the only British coach on Blackburn's list of candidates.

Ex-Wolves defender Rob Edwards was linked with the role earlier this week, following his dismissal from Luton Town.

Among the other contenders on the reported list are former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka, ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal, and ex-Young Boys chief Raphael Wicky.

Wicky was all set to take over at West Brom earlier this year, having entered into advanced talks with Albion bosses.

However, the ex-Swiss international's move to Albion fell through after issues surrounding his backroom staff.
