Mat Sadler highlights Taylor Allen's importance for Walsall after key tactical switch

Mat Sadler has backed Walsall centre-back Taylor Allen to be equally effective as a midfielder when required.

Allen stepped up into midfield for the final 20 minutes as League Two leaders Walsall came from two goals behind to draw 2-2 against Salford City at Bescot last Saturday.

Danny Johnson scored twice in the closing stages to rescue the Saddlers from the jaws of a third successive league defeat.

Evan Weir slotted in at left centre-back and collected an assist for the first of Johnson's brace 13 minutes from time.

And Weir's introduction also allowed Allen the license to play further forward, with Sadler highlighting the importance of the versatility he has within his ranks.

Boss Sadler said: "Taylor is an incredible athlete and can be just as good as an eight as he is as a centre-half.

"I'm lucky that I've got Evan Weir who can come in and play at left centre-back as well.

"But we're going to need that. Taylor then becomes a six alongside Oisin for us to finish the game.

"Sometimes that's what the game looks like. We want to be able to unsettle opponents and roll the dice.

"Seeing that we've got so many options is brilliant. Like every manager will say, the worst thing is when you feel that you can't change a game."

Allen will also reach a century of appearances for Walsall if he features at Colchester United on Saturday, a milestone which his manager insists is thoroughly deserved.

"Taylor is exactly the type of player I want in my group. The work that he puts into make sure that he is right," he continued.

Every single position that he plays, he does so with that energy, athleticism and desire to beat the best for the team which always at the heart of Taylor.
