Fleetwood Town 2-0 Walsall - player ratings

George Bennett gives his player ratings from Walsall's 2-0 defeat against Fleetwood Town at the Highbury Stadium.

Published

Tommy Simkin - 6

Difficult - Conceded from the only two attempts Fleetwood registered on target and survived a scare as he almost fluffed his lines when clearing the ball.

David Okagbue - 6

Beaten - Comfortably beaten in the air on a couple of occasions although he did create arguably Walsall's best chance with a darting run and cross for Liam Gordon after the break.

Harry Williams - 6

Varied - Failed to pick up a single Fleetwood player inside the box for both goals but defended well in open play.

Taylor Allen - 6

Struggled - Beaten in the air for the Fleetwood's first goal and struggled to provide the overlapping threat which we has offered so regularly this season.

Ryan Stirk - 6

Grew - Struggled to impose himself on the contest in the first 45. Improved after the break and threaded a sumptuous ball into the path of Josh Gordon as he tested Jay Lynch between the sticks.

Connor Barrett - 6

Mixed - Dragged into a physical battle with Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu on set pieces as he was marshalled out of the way for Fleetwood's second. Improved after the restart with a couple of breaks down the right.

Oisin McEntee - 6

Ineffective - Offered very little both defensively and offensively, with link-up play between himself and Barrett limited throughout.

Jamie Jellis - 6

Below par - Returned from illness to start but struggled to showcase the type of energy we're usually accustomed to seeing from him. Passed up one of the few opportunities created with a tame finish from Harry Williams' long throw.

Liam Gordon - 6

Threat - He at least looked to make things happen going forward although he did lose Shaun Rooney on the edge of the box for Fleetwood's opener.

Ethan Wheatley - 6

Challenging - Difficult to assess his future impact based on his first senior start. Rarely imposed himself on the contest although he did at least force a save from Lynch prior to his second half withdrawal.

Albert Adomah - 6

Faded - Offered an option between the lines for the first 10 minutes but failed to maintain that threat once Walsall fell behind as he faded into isolation.

Substitutes

Josh Gordon (for Adomah, 57) - 6

Energetic - Provided an injection of energy following his introduction and drew a near post save from Lynch.

Danny Johnson (for Wheatley, 68)

Charlie Lakin (for Jellis, 68)

Unused: Hornby, Asiimwe, Weir, Comley.
