Despite conceding late on, an own goal and fantastic finish from Zidan Sutherland was enough to see the Rangers prevail in what was expected to be Deakin’s final game in charge.

An announcement on their new manager is expected imminently after interviews took place this week ahead of the relegation six-pointer at Marston Road.

50 years ago to the day, on Saturday, January 25 in 1975, Stafford faced Peterborough United in the FA Cup fourth round at Stoke City’s Victoria Ground.

The 70’s were the Boro’s glory days and they were considered giants of non-league football, but now, they find themselves battling for survival at step four.

However, unlike in their famous cup tie, Rangers produced the goods and survived late pressure to claim an emphatic victory over fellow strugglers Wythenshawe and go two points from safety which left Deakin joyous.

“We spoke to the lads beforehand about just getting the win,” said Deakin. “We knew how important it was to close the gap.

“Although we controlled large parts of the game, there were moments where the lads had to put their bodies on the line.

“They did it and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

“It has been really difficult for the lads, the uncertainty around it. There has been a lot of negativity around the last couple of games.

“But, when Dale left it was always all about winning the games that we knew could get us out of it.

“What is going to define your season is picking points up against teams around you.

“It is in our hands, we have two games in hand on those above.

“They were magnificent today, superb.”

Rangers started with intent, and after Zidan Sutherland’s goal-bound free-kick was superbly denied, and Jack Burgess struck the post in what was an encouraging start, Stafford were gifted the lead through a comical series of errors and a seventh-minute own goal.

Moreover, brilliance from Sutherland gave the Rangers comfort into the break. The Hednesford Town-loanee was able to produce a rasping finish following a sublime run through the Wythenshawe defence.

Rangers resumed their dominance and control of play throughout the second-half where Jack Burgess came close to netting their third through a thunderous long-range effort.

But, the Boro were supplied a late scare when Wythenshawe substitute Tremaine Eastmond pulled one back for his side through a tidy finish.

However, the Rangers were able to hold on, and secure the much needed three points and their eighth league win of the season.
