His return to The Hawthorns was confirmed last week - almost 16 years on since he departed Albion for Celtic following the Baggies relegation from the Premier League.

Mowbray took charge for the first time since his return on Tuesday as Albion were beaten 2-0 by his former club Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

He returns to The Hawthorns tomorrow and a lot has changed since he was last stood in the dugout for an Albion fixture.

His last game in charge of the club on home soil came back in 2009 - as his side lost 2-0 to Liverpool, a result that confirmed their drop back to the Championship.

A year previous, his last Championship home game in charge of the Baggies was a memorable occasion.

Albion fought back to draw 1-1 with Southampton and all but secure promotion to the Premier League.

Over a decade and a half on from that game, we look back and see where Mowbray's final Baggies side is now:

April 2008 - West Brom 1-1 Southampton

Dean Kiely

The Republic of Ireland international cemented himself as Mowbray's number one during the title winning campaign - before Albion brought in Scott Carson following promotion.

Kiely would play a handful of top flight games, but remained at Albion for two more seasons under Roberto Di Matteo, before retiring at the end of the 2010/11 campaign.

He remained at the club as a coach for five years, before departing in 2015. Since then he has been on the staff at Norwich, Preston and most recently Crystal Palace.

Carl Hoefkens

A £750,000 signing from Stoke, Hoefkens was a mainstay in the title winning side but would only play 15 times in the Premier League.

He was released and returned to his native Belgium to sign for Club Brugge, before ending his career with Manchester 62 in the Gibraltar Premier Division.

After retirement he moved into coaching with Club Brugge, and was appointed as manager in 2022. He left the club in December 2022, and spent a short spell in charge of Standard Liege but was sacked after six wins in 22 games.

He is currently the manager of NAC Breda in Holland.

Leon Barnett

Signed by Mowbray for £2.5m from Luton, Barnett featured 32 times in the Championship that season, followed up by a further 11 outings in the Premier League.

He was then sent out on loan to Coventry, before departing for Norwich City where he returned to the top flight. Spells at Wigan, Bury and Northampton followed before he was forced to retire from the game with a heart problem.

He currently runs the Leon Barnett Academy.

Neil Clement

Clement became a three time promotion winner that season, the first Albion player to ever achieve the feat. In February 2008, he had been sent out on loan to Hull City, but was recalled by Albion to aid their promotion push.

He did just that, becoming a mainstay in the final weeks of the season as he reached his 300th appearance for the club.

As Albion prepared for the Premier League, Clement, who had suffered with knee injuries in the past, sustained another serious knee issue in a pre-season friendly. He never played again and retired in 2010.

Paul Robinson

Another to win multiple promotions, it was Robinson's second in an Albion shirt. He featured in almost every game and was a regular feature of the Premier League side the following season. He departed for Bolton, before spending six seasons with Birmingham.

He moved into coaching with Blues and then Millwall, and is currently on the staff at Watford.

Zoltan Gera

The title winning season was the Hungarian's last of his first spell at the club. He played in all but three league games that season, before turning down a new contract to join Fulham.

He returned in 2011, and had three seasons back in the top flight before leaving at the end of his contract to return to Ferencvaros, the club he left to join Albion back in 2004.

In his post playing career, he has served as an assistant manager at the club and with the Hungarian national team, and is currently manager of Kecskemeti in the Hungarian top flight.

Jonathan Greening

The title winning skipper followed a similar path to Gera, albeit a year later. He remained with Albion after promotion, before leaving to Fulham the following summer on loan. That turned into a permanent deal, with spells at Nottingham Forest, Barnsley, Tadcaster Albion and York City followed.

He moved into coaching and has been the manager of Scarborough Athletic since 2021.

Robert Koren

One of Mowbray's first Albion signings the previous season, Koren was a key player during the title winning campaign. He would remain at Albion for two more campaigns, helping them return to the top flight in 2010.

He was surprisingly released following promotion, after the club chose not to take up an option to extend his contract.

Koren spent four years at Hull, before spells at Melbourne City and Slovenian side Dravogard. He did move into coaching, but had just one year in charge of Slovenian third tier side NK Fuzinar.

James Morrison

One of only two players from that squad in 2008 that remain at Albion today. Promotion in his first season was followed by 12 seasons at Albion, in which he became one of the club's best ever players.

In total, he played 341 times for Albion, scoring a penalty in his final game for the club, a penalty shoot-out defeat to Aston Villa in the play-offs.

He remained at the club as a youth coach, before being promoted to the first team under Sam Allardyce, where he remained until Carlos Corberan took over.

Now 16 years on from featuring in Mowbray's last home Championship game, Morrison, who has also worked with Scotland, is back on the first team staff for his manager's return to The Hawthorns.

Ishmael Miller

The powerful forward played a key role in a three pronged attacking line for Albion and scored vital goals during the campaign. He also netted key goals in the run to the FA Cup last four, including a hat-trick against Bristol Rovers.

His move became permanent the following year but the rest of his time was blighted by injuries.

After spells elsewhere with Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough, he dropped down the leagues. He signed for Tranmere in 2019, but injuries were still plaguing his career.

Kevin Phillips

Phillips' goals played a huge part in Albion's promotion and their run to the FA Cup semi-final. In total, he bagged 24 goals in 38 games, but left before Albion kicked a ball in the Premier League.

The club offered him a one year deal with the option of a second if he played 19 or more games. He rejected it and went to Birmingham.

Further spells at Blackpool and Crystal Palace followed, where he netted the goal to win promotion to the Premier League. He ended his career at Leicester and went into coaching.

Spells at Leicester, Derby and Stoke followed before his first management job came at South Shields. Since then he has taken over at Hartlepool United and is current manager of AFC Fylde.

Substitutes

Chris Brunt

No introduction is needed for the only other player still at Albion. Brunt scored the key goal in the game to all but secure promotion. He remained at the club for 13 years in total, helping Albion to another two promotions as well as an eight year stint in the top flight.

He ended his career at Bristol City, before returning to Albion as a coach and then loans manager. Brunt was thrust into the spotlight earlier this season, taking interim charge of Albion before Mowbray's appointment, before being appointed to his staff.

Luke Moore

A loanee from Aston Villa, Moore failed to score in ten appearances before signing for Albion for £3.5m that in the summer of 2008. He scored once during the Premier League campaign and a further four times in the following promotion campaign.

He joined Derby on loan, before departing permanently for Swansea. Spells in Turkey and the MLS followed before he finished his career in Canada with Toronto.

He then returned to the West Midlands and is now an agent.

Roman Bednar

The striker scored 17 goals that season after arriving from Hearts on loan, before playing more than 25 games in the Premier League after Albion shelled out £2.3m for him.

He played a key role in getting Albion back to the top flight, but that season was embroiled in controversy as he was cautioned by police for drug possession, and handed a backdated three month ban by the FA.

After Albion he played in Turkey, signed for Sparta Prague, before ending his career in the Czech second tier with Pribram, where he took over as manager in 2024.

Michael Danek

A forgettable name from the Albion squad, Danek signed on loan in January 2008 and then again when Albion were promoted, but failed to play a single game.

He spent the rest of his career in the Czech Republic, before retiring in 2021 and going into coaching. He is currently goalkeeping coach at Czech side Banik Ostrava.

Martin Albrechtsen

The Danish international was in his third season at the club, and played a number of games as Albion were promoted back to the Premier League, but as an unused substitute in Mowbray's final game in charge.

He left for Derby County, before heading back to Denmark where he joined Midtjylland and Brondby, before dropping down the leagues.

He last played in 2023, and now works in property while also opening a pizza restaurant.
