Mowbray, 61, is on course to return to The Hawthorns almost 16 years after his departure for Celtic.
The Stoke clash is the sixth fixture since Carlos Corberan's Christmas Eve exit and the Baggies did initially eye this clash for a new man to come to the helm.
It is unlikely Mowbray will oversee Albion against the Potters - though the likelihood is he and his assistant Mark Venus will be in attendance. Chris Brunt - Mowbray's former signing and player, Damia Abella and Boaz Myhill will be at the helm one final time.
That means Mowbray's first clash at the helm is set to be an emotional return to Middlesbrough, who he represented for near a decade as a player and then as a boss.
Brunt and co. faced the challenge of preparation and picking a side for an important home fixture against a side low on points albeit in better shape of late and now under the new management of Mark Robins.
There will, however, be an emphasis on the home team to return to winning ways and get back on track in the top six hunt. The trip to play-off rivals Middlesbrough will be a stern challenge and one Mowbray is likely to oversee.
