The 61-year-old, who has been out of the game for almost after being diagnosed with bowel cancer, emerged as one of three candidates Albion had spoken to last week, about replacing Carlos Corberan.
Mowbray, who enjoyed a successful three years in charge at Albion, helping them to the Championship title and the FA Cup semi-final, was understood to be awaiting the all clear over his health, before returning to work.
Following positive talks between the two parties last week, Albion decided to go in a different direction as former Young Boys coach Raphael Wicky became the front runner to land the Albion role.
But after the club entered into advanced negotiations with the ex-Swiss international, a potential deal fell through due to issues over backroom staff.
Following that blow, it was understood Albion remained keen on Mowbray and on Thursday afternoon, talks between the two parties resumed.
Both sides are optimistic a deal can be done to secure Mowbray's return to The Hawthorns, almost 16 years on since on from his departure for Celtic in 2009.
If a deal can be done in the coming days, it is unclear whether Mowbray would be in the dugout for Albion's home clash with Stoke City on Saturday.
