Albion moved to within three games of the final on Tuesday night - advancing past the Potters at the Bet365 Stadium, thanks to first half goals from Donte-German Ranger and Divine Onyemachi.

Downing's side now head into the fifth round of the competition where they will face Norwich or Bournemouth - and he has laid down the challenge to his young charges to go and make headlines in the competition.

He said: "I'm delighted with the boys performance, to a man from the first minute to the last we put in a really good performance.

"I think if you look at the stadium and the facilities tonight, this is where the boys want to play.

"I said to them on Saturday, when we go and play it is not always a reflection on the work they do.

"But to get another game in this competition, I've said to them there have groups that have gone far in the past, so why can't you be the next."

Ollie Bostock, fresh from recently appearing on the first team bench as a substitute, went close to an opener in the Potteries, before Ranger tapped home from an Alfie Maughan cross.

Laurence Giani then struck the crossbar for Stoke, before Louis Brady had to be on hand to keep out an effort from Elliot Fearn.

The Baggies then made them pay before the break as Onyemachi latched onto a Bostock cross to slam Albion into a 2-0 lead.

Stoke were reduced to ten men in the second half as Albion saw the game out to advance into the next round.
