The 30-year-old has not been involved since hobbling off during Walsall's 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town at Bescot in August.

Gordon underwent surgery on the injury in September and made his long-awaited return to full training at the end of last month.

Sadler has stressed the importance of easing him back into the first team fold after a lengthy absence, but has hinted he could be involved for the trip to Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy next Tuesday.

He said: "My intention is for Josh to be in the squad in that game (at Peterborough on Tuesday). We'd love to get him on the pitch as well," boss Sadler revealed.

"There will be a reintegration period but I'd love for Josh to be involved in that game.

"That's certainly part of the plan, probably a couple weeks ahead of where we were maybe thinking but he's worked so hard."

The striker made six appearances in all competitions prior to his injury, scoring his only goal in a 4-0 rout over Swindon Town at the County Ground earlier in the season.

Gordon returned permanently from Burton Albion on a two-year deal last summer, after scoring once in 21 appearances in his loan spell during the second half of last season.

Gordon first arrived at Walsall from Leicester City in 2018 and netted 27 times in 123 matches in all competitions during his first spell at the club.
