A fresh spate of injuries and the lopsided nature of our squad was fatally exposed, leaving Nuno and Gibbs-White to joyfully cannibalise the hand that used to feed them. One who gloriously immersed himself deeply into the culture of our club and the other who never really got the chance.

Wolves responded with real spirit after the Forest opener but without the finishing power of Cunha, we were desperately wasteful up front and the sucker-punch we suffered for the second goal sealed the issue.

Gibbs-White, inspired by the abuse that has long run its course and is now frankly tedious, shaped the first-half. Nuno’s tactical adjustments influenced the second period to ensure that Forest’s lead was never threatened before the final indignity just prior to full-time.

Frankly, few Wolves, fans inside Molineux were remotely surprised that both men had such a massive input to the final outcome. For a team at the top of their form, this was the perfect away performance.

For Wolves, despite a modicum of optimism, a salutary lesson none the less. No amount of excellent approach-play counts for anything if you concede cheaply and blow your own chances in front of goal.

There was an undeniably better structure and sense of organisation in comparison to the chaotic final throes of the O’Neil regime. But it’s abundantly clear that reinforcements are desperately needed. Presumably, that process is already under way.

Nuno has got Forest playing how he had us playing. Tight, organised, good without the ball and pace in attack. It worked for us and its working for them. How different would we be if we had three Boly’s at the back. Instead we were down to the last three men standing to occupy the central defence.

It is no wonder everyone wearing gold and black felt nervous at the sight of the teamsheet and it was somewhat reflected on the pitch as well.
