The three times Walsall won seven in a row as the 'Class of 25' chase history

Walsall have their sights set on a club record-breaking eighth consecutive league win when Tranmere Rovers visit Bescot this weekend.

Their comeback victory over Notts County at Meadow Lane on New Year's Day saw them secure seven wins in a row in the league for only the fourth time in the club's history.

Here, we delve through the archives to look back on the previous three times Walsall went on such a stellar run.

1933-34

Bill Slade had masterminded Walsall's famous 2-1 victory over Herbert Chapman's all-conquering Arsenal at Fellows Park in the FA Cup third round in January 1933.

And he closed the calendar year by setting a club record seven consecutive league wins. That run started with a 2-0 home success over Rochdale courtesy of goals from Bill Sheppard and club legend Gilbert Alsop.

Alsop then scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Chesterfield before bagging a hat-trick in a 5-0 demolition of Accrington Stanley. He would eventually finish the season with a club record tally of 40 - a feat he would repeat the following campaign.

Darlaston, Wrexham and Hartlepool were all beaten in the build-up to Christmas and a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town sealed the record on Christmas Day.

Walsall would eventually finish fourth in the Third Division North but Slade was sacked after a poor start to the 1934-35 season.

1959-60

The Saddlers would have to wait another 24 years before matching that feat during their Division Four title-winning campaign under the legendary Bill Moore.

Walsall's streak started against the same opponents as the previous one in 1933 with a brace from club icon Colin Richards and goals from Peter Billingham and John Davies securing a 4-2 success over Rochdale.

Oldham Athletic, Workington, Doncaster Rovers and Northampton Town became Walsall's next victims before Richards bagged another brace to lead them to a 3-2 victory over Torquay United.

Richards scored seven times during that record-equalling run and finished the season as Walsall's leading scorer with 28 - a feat he achieved six times during his eight-and-a-half years at Fellows Park.

They wrapped up their seventh win in style with Colin Taylor completing his hat-trick and Roy Faulkner and Davies bagging braces in an 8-0 thrashing of Stockport County.

Walsall clinched the league crown with a club record-breaking 65 points (when two points were awarded per win) and scored a record-equalling 102 goals en route to the title.

They would ultimately gain automatic promotion to the Second Division the following campaign where they spent the next two years before slipping back into the third-tier.

2004-05 & 2005-06

Walsall were at risk of falling to a second successive relegation as Paul Merson's first full campaign as player-manager entered its final six games.

A 1-1 draw at home to Torquay United did little to keep the relegation blues at bay but Mark Wright's 90th-minute winner guided them to a crucial 2-1 victory at Swindon Town.

The Saddlers streaked clear of the drop zone with further wins against Peterborough United, Hull City and Hartlepool United before rounding off the season with a 3-0 triumph over Stockport County at Bescot.

They started the following season with back-to-back wins over Rotherham United and Nottingham Forest but it would ultimately prove a false dawn.

Merson was sacked after a 5-0 defeat against Brentford in February 2006 and Kevan Broadhurst was unable to rescue them from the drop as they finished rock bottom in League One.
