No weather issues at Wolverhampton ahead of two big meetings
The cold snap that has swept across Britain hasn’t affected racing plans at Wolverhampton Racecourse, with the first of two meetings at the track this week set for the off on Monday evening.
The action gets underway at 5pm with a six furlong sprint in class five before the card comes to a close at 8.30pm as nine runners tackle the one and a half mile division two handicap in class six.

The opening contest on the Wolverhampton card sees a decent field of eleven head to the stalls for the class five handicap over the six furlong sprint distance (5.00). Previous course winner Lequinto hasn’t won in 12 starts but shaped well when third of eight at Lingfield last time out and is eased in class here so should be bang in there for trainer Tony Carroll in the opener.
Enola Grey bagged a career-best when landing a seven-runner handicap at this track 16 days ago and looks the one to beat again in race two on Monday (5.30) as a 2lb rise in the weights shouldn’t be an issue to follow up. Radiant Beauty, a winner at Kempton in August and second over course and distance last time out, rates the chief threat from the Dr Richard Newland yard.
Eleven runners will take on the maiden fillies’ stakes in class five to mark race three on the card (6.00) with preference heading the way of the Ed Bethell-trained Orangesandlemons, second last time out at Newcastle 16 days ago, while race four of the evening (6.30) can go to Royal Zabeel, a winner at Southwell last time out for trainer Mick Appleby who is taken to defy a 6lb hike in the weights for that success.
Fools Rush In has been nudged up only 2lb in the weights for a recent win at Southwell and is taken to follow up in race five on Monday (7.00), while the sixth race of the day (7.30) can go the way of Gustav Graves, a four-time course and distance winner that hinted at a revival when fifth at Newcastle last week and was the winner of this race last year for trainer Derek Shaw.
Division one of the class six handicap marks the penultimate race on the Wolverhampton card on Monday (8.00) and The Resdev Way appeals most in what looks a weak-looking contest for the Mick and David Easterby yard, a previous course winner and was a respectable sixth at this venue last time out. Another course and distance winner in Muhalel rates the chief threat having taken a positive step last time out when seventh at Dundalk on his last spin.
Finally, the card comes to a close with a division two contest in the same discipline (8.30) and the finale can head the way of Desiderata, a winner of a nine-runner minor event at big odds of 66/1 on Saturday and could follow up here provisioning the quick turnaround isn’t too much. Of his eight rivals, Wannabeawallaby rates the next best, a respectable fourth when last seen at Southwell and has slipped in the weights here despite looking back to some sort of form in that run.
