Williams' Swansea claimed a point against Albion with a stoppage-time equaliser to deny the Baggies a victory on the road.

Joe Allen's late header cancelled out Tom Fellows' breakthrough for managerless Albion to cap a week in which 43-year-old Williams was linked with the vacant Hawthorns post - though it is understood he is not in the frame to take over.

Williams had previously made comments in press conferences that did not distance himself from the role and admitted Albion 'would not want him in the wake of the 4-0 defeat to Portsmouth'. But London-born Williams later apologised to supporters admitting he should have taken the speculation more seriously. He had previously said he felt it was a wind-up.

After Saturday lunchtime's 1-1 draw, Williams said:  "It's a situation I did not help. I created a lot of the noise.

"There's been no contact from West Brom, to me, my agent or the football club.

"In fact my agent has felt quite unwell and has spent most of the Christmas period in bed! He phoned me up to say 'what have you done?'

"I'm pleased that's behind us and I thought the players were excellent today."

Albion were punished for not taking advantage of their dominance in the first half at Swansea.com Stadium. Home goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux was not stretched enough despite numerous promising attacking positions in the final third.

Fellows emerged from the bench to make what looked the telling impact but 88th-minute substitute Allen, the Wales international and former Liverpool and Stoke midfielder, crept in to head beyond Alex Palmer in stoppage time.

The stats read 16 shots in favour of 10 for Albion - and four to two on target - but Williams felt his side were value for a point. The Baggies' interim boss Chris Brunt felt the late equaliser was undeserved.

Williams added: "I think we deserved to draw, it was two very tired sides and you could see that early on, but we deserved a point.

"Joey Allen is a special player. Some players are full-backs, midfielders or wingers, Joey Allen is a football. He can read pictures on the pitch. The goal sums him up. In a crowded midfield plays it out, a flick to keep it alive and scores with a glancing header. It sums up Joey Allen as a footballer. He can handle himself in all different scenarios."
