Summer signing Diakite was handed just a second Championship start by Brunt and the Baggies' caretaker team in a changed midfield that included Jayson Molumby with Alex Mowatt sidelined through injury.
Diakite's only previous Albion start was at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was withdrawn at half-time. At Bramall Lane the Malian made a poor error for Andre Brooks to score the opener but he responded admirably and played a key role in the visitors earning a deserved point.
"Sheffield for him last time wasn't great but today I thought he was outstanding, for the whole game," Brunt said of Diakite.
