The Spain international centre-back was forced off just 20 minutes into the match and left Villa Park on crutches, wearing a boot on his right foot.

Torres will undergo a scan on Tuesday to discover the extent of the damage.

Emery said: “Maybe it is the metatarsal, maybe. That would be the worst news. We will confirm it tomorrow.”

Torres’ injury added further to Villa’s frustration after they were denied a fourth consecutive home league win by Tariq Lamptey’s 81st minute equaliser.

Ollie Watkins had earlier cancelled out Simon Adingra’s opener from the spot after Villa were awarded a penalty following a VAR check.

Morgan Rogers then fired the hosts in front with his sixth Premier League goal of the season early in the second half but they were unable to kill off their opponents, who struck late to deny them three points.

Villa remain ninth in the Premier League table and have work to do over the second half of the season if they are to repeat their 2024 feat of qualifying for the Champions League.

“The point was not enough, how we played after conceding the first goal,” said Emery.

“I think we deserved to win and played more or less in the same form as we did in the last matches at home.

“But sometimes it is not enough, as it was tonight. We have to be proud of the year, everything we did.

“Now we have the average of 29 points at the halfway point, near enough for being in Europe. Of course, with 31 points we would have been closer.

“We have to accept it, start analysing and be ready for our next game on Saturday against Leicester.”
