The Baggies impressed in South Yorkshire and Karlan Grant's equaliser on the stroke of half-time was just reward for a tireless performance full of endeavour and quality.

Brunt said the troops were left walking wounded after giving it everything to keep the automatic promotion-hunting Blades at bay. Albion were not just content with their point though and had a couple of presentable openings for a winner.

The Baggies were roared off by around 2,000 travelling fans. Asked if he felt proud of the display, Brunt replied:  "Yes, I've just said that, the lads gave everything they could today. It was a quick turnaround, not much recovery time from two games previous.

"They did everything we asked of them and probably more. On another day we could've been coming away with three points. It was probably similar to the home game in that we were doing well and conceded at a bad time.

"The response was great. We're very happy. We'd have been a little bit more happy with all three (points) but we had to make a few subs, some tired legs sort've threw a bit of chaos into it but credit to the lads, they got around each other and defended well in those last few minutes, long throws and a corner. They stood up to be counted. That's all you can ask when standing there."

The Blades opened the scoring through Andre Brooks, who pounced on an error from rare starter Ousmane Diakite, but the Malian midfielder otherwise shone in a fine display. He and midfield partner Jayson Molumby, the star man, typified Albion.

Grant smashed in his sixth goal of the season with a trademark effort from just outside the box, pinpoint low into the bottom left corner for Albion's equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Brunt, part of the caretaker team with Damia Abella and Boaz Myhill, added: "Derby (Boxing Day defeat) was maybe a bit of a hangover after Carlos leaving. Playing Sheffield United so recently in the home game, the lads felt they could've won that. They had the confidence to come here and more than match them.

"Hopefully that'll give them a little bit more confidence now. We'll try to get as many as we can (ready) there were a few walking wounded after the game as you'd expect at this time of year.

"It's always tough coming here, they have good players in attacking areas, Kieffer Moore is a massive handful how he gets hold of the ball. I thought Kyle Bartley and Heggy did really well against him.

"It's a positive performance and result. It speaks volumes we're probably disappointed we didn't come away with a win."

Brunt confirmed midfield omission Alex Mowatt and defender Mason Holgate both missed out with groin strains with scans to determine the timescale of their time out of the side. Neither are likely to be ready to face Preston at home on New Year's Day.
