Grant McCann's charges registered a first win in three games to leapfrog Crewe Alexandra and climb into third-place with a 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday.

Joseph Olowu opened the scoring seven minutes before the break and Patrick Kelly and Kyle Hurst extended their advantage after Tom Davies was sent off for Tranmere.

That ended a five match winless run on home soil for Rovers (drawing four, losing once) which stretched back to October 1 and McCann was delighted to banish that mini blip ahead of a key clash on Boxing Day.

He told Doncaster Free Press: "It takes a bit of a monkey off our back here doesn't it?

"I'm really pleased and I know I keep harping on about it but our form from February onwards here (at home) has been really strong.

"We've drawn a couple and lost a couple but we love and enjoy playing here in front of our supporters."

Doncaster closed the gap behind second-place Port Vale to just a single point and sit seven points adrift of Walsall. And after returning to winning ways, Doncaster will be aiming to claw back points in the title race.

Rovers suffered defeat on their last road trip with a 1-0 setback at AFC Wimbledon but have been strong overall on their travels of late.

They've collected four wins from their last six league games away from home (drawing once) and boast the fourth best away record in the division with 17 points from 10 matches.

Only Chesterfield (21) have netted more on their travels than Doncaster who're the joint-second leading scorers in the division along with Walsall (both 16).
