As Tuesday progressed and confirmation of Carlos Corberan's move to Valencia grew more likely, Brunt was reached out to by the Baggies' top brass and asked if he was willing to step into the interim role.

He is assisted by Corberan's former staff member Damia Abella, who remains with the Baggies, and former goalkeeper and academy keeper coach Boaz Myhill.

Brunt admitted the 11th-hour call was far from what he expected when it came to a Christmas Day training session and travel to the east Midlands in preparation to face Derby.

"I had a phone call late afternoon Christmas Eve saying that this may be a possibility, have a think about it and see what you think," said interim head coach Brunt.
