The Stoke City loanee registered his eighth league clean sheet during Walsall's 1-0 win over Barrow at Bescot on Saturday to surpass their tally of seven from the previous campaign.

Simkin is just one shy of AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper Owen Goodman who kept his ninth shutout of the campaign in a 1-0 win against Doncaster Rovers on the weekend.

And Simkin is determined to keep ticking off the clean sheets after an impressive return from his first 18 league outings.

He said: "We want to win the golden glove. After every game when I get a clean sheet, me and Dan Still are like that's another one ticked off.

"It's good (eight clean sheets). I think we got seven last year so to beat that already and we're not even at Christmas yet is a really good stepping stone for me in my career.

"But I've got to keep on going to win it because I know there are some really good goalkeepers in the league.

"We just want to make this place so hard for people to come to and to play against us. The lads are brilliant and we've just got to keep it up. Focus on one game at a time and see where that takes us."

Walsall moved four points clear at the summit over the weekend to guarantee top spot at Christmas for the first time since 2006.
