The Saddlers soared to the summit last week with back-to-back statement wins over fellow promotion hopefuls Notts County and Port Vale and strengthened their grip on top spot with a third win on the spin in League Two.
Mat Sadler's men extended their best unbeaten league run in a single season to 10 games and stretched their lead to four points after second-place Vale, who they boast a game in hand over, were held to a goalless stalemate at Bromley.
The Walsall boss refused to be drawn into any talk of promotion in his post-match press conference and was quick to point out that no team has ever won anything at Christmas.
However, the last three league champions were top at Christmas while five of the last six festive table toppers went on to lift the League Two title at the end of the season with Newport County being the only exception in 2020-21.
Sadler was forced into one change after George Hall dropped out of the squad with a hamstring issue which he suffered towards the end of training on Friday.
The Birmingham City loanee had started the past three league matches although Sadler was unable to shed any light on how long the midfielder could be set to miss.
