'Damage is done': Wolves fans react to Gary O'Neil sacking

O'Neil has been under pressure for a number of weeks before he was publicly backed by Wolves chairman Jeff Shi in midweek.

However, after a fourth straight defeat that saw Wolves concede a last minute winner against Ipswich, O'Neil criticised his players in his post match interviews.

Rayan Ait-Nouri was also sent off after the final whistle, with Matheus Cunha also involved in an incident.

And on Sunday morning O'Neil was relieved of his duties.

Wolves fans have reacted largely backing the move, but others have hit out at the owners and pointed to other issues such as finances and recruitment.

One fan said: "Wolves sacking Gary O’Neil is proof that loyalty in football lasts about as long as a cold winter’s night. Onto the next victim."

Another had sympathy for O'Neil, and expressed concern about who would be the next through the door.

They said: "Got to feel sorry for the next manager… I can’t see anyone with any real stature turning up without some cast it on assurances. 

"Or - does Shi grab an ‘up and coming’ manager - suck up a season or two in the championship and hope for the best. This has all the hallmarks of the MM season with a sacrificial manager next in line - I hope I’m wrong."

Another insisted the coming weeks were huge for the owners, stating: "Only nine weeks too late unfortunately……now we will see over the next 4/5 weeks how serious Fosun are in Wolverhampton Wanderers, Hobbs & Shi should be following him down the road! Actions will speak louder than any words! We need more than positive atoms! Serious investment!"

Another also stuck up for O'Neil, adding: "Not all GON fault, whoever comes in (if anyone wants to come with this model) will have the same players and the same board who just sell our best players every year! Every manager who comes is set up to fail with Shi and Fosun!"

Another Wolves fans believes the damage is already done.

They added: "Damage is already done sadly. Who would want to work with these owners?"

One Wolves fan predicts a repeat of the current situation again in the future, adding: "At last, but Fosun needs to put up or get out. Change the self-sustaining model, or if we manage to survive, we will be back here again."

While another supporter believes a new boss may be on a hiding to nothing, adding: "We sell half our best players and don't replace them. So what use is a new manager going to be when we don't have good enough players and no defence at all?"
