However, stages of Gareth Southgate's reign are becoming quite similar to the current run that Albion find themselves on at the moment.

Southgate took English football from the doldrums, from failing to make it to the latter stages of tournaments, all the way to finals and semi-finals.

He raised the nation on and off the field, helped fans fall back in love with the national team and took England to heights not seen for decades.

But by the end of it, many supporters were left with a feeling of 'what if'. What if Southgate, a very structured and pragmatic manager, had taken the shackles off?

If he had, would England have won major honours?

Those questions still remain regarding Southgate - and it has been raised in recent weeks that the situation Southgate found himself in with England is akin to that at Albion at the moment.
