Premier League fans latest to hit out at ticket prices - months after Aston Villa criticised

Back in the summer Aston Villa's new season ticket prices came in for scrutiny, which then ramped up when it came to high Champions League ticket prices.

And now Manchester United officials are coming under similar scrutiny, for a decision to raise matchday ticket prices to £66 per game mid season, with no concessions made for children and pensioners.

A protest took place at Old Trafford on Saturday and in response, United said in a statement, they were having to make the move to increase revenues.

The statement said: "As a club, we have been focused on cost saving to put us on a stronger financial footing.

"This means having to make very hard decisions, including a significant reduction in our staff numbers.

"It also means looking for opportunities to increase our revenues so we can continue to invest in football and infrastructure.

"We have now sold over 97 per cent of tickets this season, many of which were at a discounted rate. We are implementing some policy changes for matches that have already sold out, where only small numbers of tickets will be released."

It is a similar reason Villa gave regarding their Champions League ticket prices earlier in the season.

The majority of fans have been made to pay between £70 and £97 to see Villa in action against the likes of Bayern Munich and Juventus on their return to Europe's elite competition.

Villa's president of business operations has borne the brunt of the criticism that followed, after Villa claimed were necessary to help the club raise revenues and continue competing with the Premier League’s elite.
