Walsall debrief: Luck favoured the brave on an out-of-sorts night for the Saddlers
David Okagbue rescued a point against Bromley with a dramatic last-gasp equaliser to extend Walsall's unbeaten run to six games in League Two.
Liam Gordon opened the scoring for Walsall on the cusp of half-time before goals from Michael Cheek and Danny Imray propelled Bromley into the lead.
Walsall looked destined to fall to a second home defeat of the season until Okagbue scrambled the ball over the line with the final kick of the game.
Here, we take a look at the main talking points from Tuesday's draw.
Luck favours the brave
It was far from vintage and Walsall can count themselves lucky to have salvaged a point but the fact that they did speaks volumes of the character in this team.
Walsall missed the opportunity to close the gap behind league leaders Port Vale to a single point but can view it as a point gained based on the performance.
They looked disjointed at times and their inability to pick out the final pass proved a frustrating theme. Jack Earing and George Hall were recalled for rare starts and showed flashes of quality in the first half although they both faded after the break.
Walsall were ultimately made to pay for a flat start to the second half and Bromley were ruthless in their execution. But Walsall have made a habit of scoring late goals with the joint-most after 90 minutes (three) in the division.
And Okagbue delivered another heroic late moment to rescue Walsall from the jaws of defeat and keep them firmly in the early promotion hunt.
It's been a special couple of weeks for Okagbue. He made his debut for Republic of Ireland under-21s and consolidated his international exploits by setting up Nathan Lowe's match-winner at AFC Wimbledon on the weekend.
The defender inadvertently collected another assist when his headed clearance sent Gordon sprinting away from the Bromley defence to score the opener. And he then added the icing on the cake with his first goal since returning to the club on a permanent basis in the summer.
Is possession key?
Bromley clearly arrived at Bescot with a game plan and made life difficult for Walsall who were tasked with keeping more of the ball than they are usually accustomed to.
In fact, Walsall have had less possession than the opposition in each of their nine league wins and have only collected one win in League Two after having the majority of the ball during Mat Sadler's reign.
Walsall have traditionally been a low possession team under Sadler. While that has been hugely successful this season, there is still the concern that they may sometimes come unstuck against teams that sit in, as demonstrated in the 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers earlier in the season and the goalless stalemate at Accrington Stanley in October.
Key Period
Walsall sit three points adrift of the league summit but boast a game in hand on leaders Port Vale who they face next Saturday after hosting fellow promotion contenders Notts County in midweek.
