West Brom loanee insists players cannot forget defensive principles

Holgate was on the scoresheet alongside top marksman Josh Maja in a 2-2 draw against Norwich City on Saturday - as Albion picked up seventh draw in their last ten outings.

It was more entertaining than the recent drab scoreless games that The Hawthorns crowd have had served up to them - with more goals scored in the clash with the Canaries than in all the previous home games this season combined.

It could well have been a win had Karlan Grant's goal not be disallowed - and the Everton loanee Holgate believes that goal just typified how things are going for Albion now.

And the key difference in games is that other sides coming to The Hawthorns are pleased with a point, whereas Albion are repeatedly coming away disappointed.

He said: "We're missing that killer instinct that is in us, and we need to put them away to turn draws into wins.

"There is no way around that, we are frustrated with these draws we are getting, and I think in a lot of cases we are coming away disappointed where as the other side aren't, which proves where we are.

"On another day, KG's (Karlan Grant) goal is allowed, which I think was very harsh, I don't think you will see many of those given this season.

"So it is things like that and getting the rub of the green, and the lack of killer instinct why we are not turning those draws into wins and it is disappointing."

Albion have conceded just 11 goals this season in the league, with three of them coming in the last two outings against Norwich and Hull.

Despite not scoring, a watertight backline has been one of the strengths of Albion's season and has helped to keep them in the play-off spots despite struggling in front of goal.

However, in the last two games Albion have opened up and gone more offensive in search of more creativity to try and turn their run of draws into wins.

Holgate, who has struck up a key partnership with Torbjorn Heggem in recent weeks amid a mini injury crisis at the back, insisted the front players have the quality to really hurt sides - but Albion cannot forget their defensive principles that have served them so well this season so far.

He added: "It is something we have been working on because we haven't been scoring enough.

"But we can't lose the other side to our game, we are hard to score against.

"We don't concede many, with us and Sunderland conceding the last amount of goals.

"It is disappointing that Norwich scored two, because that doesn't happen too often in games this season.

"So we do need to focus on goals but also we need to keep our concentration because we have done so well this season when it comes to not letting the other team score."
