Griffiths, 23, is on a season-long loan at Bristol Rovers and has enjoyed a strong start to the League One campaign as one of the Gas' more consistent performers.

The Hereford-born Albion academy graduate, a former England youth international, agreed a new contract extension until 2027 at The Hawthorns prior to moving out to the Memorial Stadium in the summer.

He has already made 18 appearances for a Gas side struggling for form down in 14th in the third tier but Griffiths has won praise with five clean sheets in 15 league outings so far.

It is the highly-rated goalkeeper's fourth loan stint away from his parent club but Griffiths, speaking to Bristol Live, reckons he will "probably" have to look to confirm his long-term future at Albion - with a fight to win the first-choice shirt from Alex Palmer - at the end of the season following this current loan spell.

"There does, yeah, and I think that's probably maybe where I'm going to be at after this loan," said Griffiths when asked about a realistic fight for the No.1 shirt at The Hawthorns.

"I think at some point I've got to sort of stamp my feet down and say, 'look, I want to fight for my position.'"

Griffiths will, next summer, still have two years to run on his Baggies deal.

He revealed he wasted little time at the end of last season to make his position clear to Albion about another loan given Palmer dominated the No.1 shirt last season with every minute in all 46 regular Championship games and both semi-final legs - jointly winning the golden glove in the process.

The shot-stopper has previously enjoyed loans at Cheltenham, Lincoln and Portsmouth and already clocked up more than 100 senior games. He played 10 times for Albion late in 2022/23 following an injury to Palmer, but last season was restricted to just three cup games, though one was the infamous Black Country Derby FA Cup defeat.

Griffiths, who joined Albion aged 10 and has long had a promising reputation, added: "I sort of brought the conversation to them end of last season because, as good as it is being at a Championship club, I want to be playing and I knew Alex was doing so well that it was probably more likely looking like a loan spell this year.

"So that conversation happened quite early and then it was just deciding where I wanted to go and which clubs would suit me and vice versa. So Bristol (Rovers) was very attractive and they approached me and presented well and at the end of the day, it was probably quite an easy decision."

On his latest loan spell so far, he added: "I don't personally (set targets), I'm sure there are some that do. I think it's more about coming and being at my best and performing as well as I can and then hopefully the clean sheets are a result of that. But yeah, it's always nice to have something to sort of grade your season, I guess."
