The title-chasing National League Northern Premier side’s usual XI started the game against Sphinx, who play two tiers below Wolves in the West Midlands Premier Division.

Manager Dan McNamara said the decision to play a strong line-up was difficult.

He said: “It’s one of them. I don’t like seeing it if I'm honest. I don’t like it, however, football is football, and you have to pay the opposition respect and in doing that we played the team we normally play. I thought they gave a good account of themselves in certain moments.

“Plenty of goals, plenty of good moves but it doesn’t really ‘float my boat’ when you are talking about progressing the women’s game.”

Destiny Toussaint netted a hat-trick, while Amber Hughes, Tammi George, Charlotte Greengrass and Madison Calder all bagged braces.

The remaining four came from Hannah Fryer, Beth Merrick and Abbi Jenner, before Jade Cross sealed the win in the last minute.

Calder’s goals were her first two for Wolves – the 16-year-old’s first at a senior level.

McNamara added: “Maddie is and I've said it since I first came to the club and caught eye of her, she is a very good finisher, a natural finisher.

“There are areas of her game that she needs to improve. She’s got to have as much desire without the ball as to when she has it, but we are working on that.”

Elsewhere in the Cup, West Bromwich won 7-1 hosting Sutton Coldfield Town. Ali Miller got a brace, while Ellie May, Simran Jhamat, Fran Orthodoxou, Rhianne Oakley and an own goal contributed to the tally.

Lye Town are also through to the quarter-finals. After a 2-2 draw, they beat Coundon Court Ladies 8-7 on penalties with goals from Macy Fox and Louisa Butcher. Birmingham City are through after beating Leafield Athletic after a 1-1 draw led to a shootout win and Aston Villa are through after a 3-0 win against Boldmere St Michaels.

Ebony Salmon’s last-minute winner against Crystal Palace earned Aston Villa their first win of the Women’s Super League season. They move up to eighth in the division, thanks to goals from Anna Patten, Rachel Daly and Salmon.

In the National League Northern Premier Division, Sporting Khalsa drew 0-0 with Derby County, but remain two points from safety.

Halesowen Town drew 2-2 in West Midlands Division One South, remaining top of the league. Jazmine Bourne and Kirsty Spencer scored in the game against Redditch Borough.

Hednesford Town put four past Newcastle Town in the Staffordshire FA Challenge Cup to win 4-0. Rachel Cumerledge and Ria Elsmore scored braces for their side.

Leila Burford got a hat-trick as Walsall Wood also won in the Staffordshire cup, beating Leek Town 6-3. Sophie Rowland also got a brace after Athena Simpson added one to the scoreline.

Lichfield City were knocked out of the competition by Port Vale. Corinna Williams scored as they lost 5-1.

In the Birmingham Challenge Vase, Walsall beat Leamington 2-1 with goals from Gurjit Dulay and Charlotte Turner.
