Dan McNamara interview: Wolves Women fighting against the odds in a growing game

Modern football is governed by money and the fast-growing women's game is starting to feel the same impact.

The success of the Lionesses and the gradual building of the infrastructure in the game has seen it undergo dramatic changes in recent years, which is also felt further down the pyramid.

It is no different in the National League Northern Premier Division, where Wolves Women have been plying their trade. More teams are now going full-time and are injecting money to achieve success.

Wolves have not done that, yet they find themselves battling at the top of the table once again.

Club owners Fosun have not yet taken the Women's team full-time and are keen for them to be sustainable, but after 11 league games the team has nine wins, with just one defeat, and they are taking on some of the big spenders at the top of the division.

"It's been incredible," head coach Dan McNamara told the Express & Star.

"To be mixing it in amongst the big hitters within tier three is credit to the girls.

"We're 100 per cent overachieving, but I'm not surprised because I've worked with the core group of this team for a long time now and I know what they bring.

"When you've got good people that are all trying to do a good thing, then sometimes you can surprise people and I think that's what they're doing now.

"It's credit to the way they represent the club, week on week. I think they're remarkable young women.

"It's tough, but I think we always call on the adversity we've been through in the last seven years.

"You think back to what this group have been through. COVID, the denied promotions, the heartbreak of missing out on goal difference, the heartbreak of losing a play-off when your dream so close.
