Heggem, 25, has proven a revelation since checking into The Hawthorns for a fee of around £525,000 from IF Brommapojkarna in Sweden in the summer.

The Norwegian defender has shone mostly as a left-back for Carlos Corberan's side despite his giant frame of 6ft 6ins more that of a centre-back. Heggem moved into the heart of Albion's back four in Friday's draw at Luton due to shortages in the area and was hailed as "brilliant" by the head coach.

It did not take the Baggies faithful long to take a shine to their new Scandinavian defender with the now familiar chant of "Heggem!" first bellowing from the stands on the opening day as Albion ran out 3-1 winners at Queens Park Rangers - on a day a fine Heggem cross created one of Josh Maja's hat-trick goals.

Heggem, a quiet and unassuming character, said: "I think I heard it at QPR, the first game. In Norway it's not normal to have your own song, especially at the club I came from, that is something special with England I think. It was really cool.
