Walsall defender Liam Gordon sets end of season target after strong start
Liam Gordon insists promotion is the target for Walsall after their strong start to the season under Mat Sadler.
Walsall sit second in League Two after collecting eight wins from their opening 13 matches.
They've also replicated that form in the cup competitions after booking their place in the FA Cup second round courtesy of a dramatic 2-1 win over League One side Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
The Guyana international warned there is still a long season ahead but acknowledged that everyone is together in the quest to challenge for promotion.
He said: "It's a testament to the team and our mentality. We have no fear going into these games against higher opposition and it probably spurs us on a little bit more because we believe that we'll be there next season.
"It's a good test for us to show what we can do and what we're building on this season hopefully in preparation for next season.
"We take each game as it comes. That's what we're going to do throughout the whole season. Never get too high or too low with the results but that's our plan.
"We all know that we've got to stick to that and stay together as a group because there's still a long way to go."
Liam Gordon scored against his former club to cancel out Josh Sheehan's 55th-minute opener before Jamie Jellis sealed the win with a memorable stoppage time winner.
The 25-year-old made 36 appearances during his two seasons at Bolton and admitted it was a special feeling to mark his reunion with a vital equaliser.
"It was an unbelievable feeling. I saw my mum in the crowd after and I blew her a kiss. It was nice and it was a special feeling for me. I had good times and bad times at Bolton but it's always something special when you've got to play against your old team," the wing-back continued.
"The players were there when I was there and the manager is still there but to score tops everything so I was delighted.
"A lot of boys have got so much pride to play for this club. Myself included and it's a club which is on the up. We've created that connection and this is the closest I've felt to the fans since I've been here.
"They're buying into what the gaffer is trying to do and hopefully we keep growing as a club."
