Ali Young sets sail for the Olympics
Ali Young is heading to her third Olympic Games.
The Wolverhampton-born sailor will represent Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Games in the women’s laser radial class. She already has a World Cup bronze on the same waters that will be raced on in Japan next year and is now looking forward to the long build-up.
“I’m confident in my own ability and what I can do, but it’s always a relief to get the selection done so you can fine tune your preparation,” she told the Express & Star. “There’s a few key areas we are looking to work on – things we have identified from the venue (which could be crucial).
“It’s been really good to gain some experience (in Japan) and there’s been a variety of conditions.”
Young finished fifth in her maiden Olympics in 2012, but could only manage eighth in Rio last time after suffering a broken ankle in the lead-up.
And she is hoping to stay healthy for her best shot of finally getting on the podium.
“Each cycle throws up different challenges – I managed to injure my knee earlier this year,” she said. “All you can do is keep learning and keep looking forward to the Games.”
