The five-times Paralympic gold medallist, from Aldridge, came fourth in the SM6 200m individual medley final last night.

The event was won by fellow Briton Maisie Summers-Newton with Simmonds in fourth – just 0.22seconds behind the bronze medal position.

Meanwhile, fellow Aldridge para swimmer Tully Kearney said it was even sweeter to add a second gold in as many days after following up S5 50m freestyle gold with victory in the S5 200m freestyle 24 hours later.

“It’s definitely pretty special with this being my best event,” she said after her second victory on Tuesday night.

“I didn’t really enjoy swimming the 50-metre race, so this definitely means more to me.

“I knew if I was going to win it then I had to start out quick because the Italians girls had good pace so that was the aim really.

“It gives me confidence going into Tokyo, I’ve had such a rocky season and I’ve barely trained so for me to be able to do that on minimal fitness gives me a great boost if I can get a full training season behind me going out there.”

Kearney goes for a third gold on Sunday in the S5 100m freestyle, while Simmonds will compete in the SB6 100m breaststroke on the same day.
