Paul Broadhurst drops off top at the end

Paul Broadhurst suffered a nightmare end to the defence of his Senior USPGA Championship title.

The Walsall-born golfer led going into the final round in Rochester, New York, and at one stage was clear by as many as four shots.

He was still out in front going down the 16th, but a double bogey knocked him off the top, and a bogey at the last meant he had to settle for third. He did, though, have the consolation of a cheque for almost £170,000.

Broadhurst – who was part of Europe’s Ryder Cup team in 1991 – has enjoyed a stellar senior career and was bidding for his third major at that level.

Ken Tanigawa benefitted from Broadhurst’s slip-up to win his first senior major and pick up a cheque for more than £460,000.

Scott McCarron was a shot back in second.
