The world No.3 was in imperious form as he swept aside Welshman Jak Jones 6-2 in the opening round of the China Open to progress to the final stages in Beijing next month.

Joining Trump in the next round were former world champions Neil Robertson and Peter Ebdon, who whitewashed Hamza Akbar and Sanderson Lam, respectively.

However, 2006 world champion Graeme Dott – the world No.19 – was surprisingly knocked out by Gerard Greene in a final-frame decider.

Four-time world champion John Higgins beat Chris Totten 6-1 during the afternoon session, while top-16 players Stephen Maguire and Luca Brecel also advanced by the same score.

Walsall’s Mark Joyce was in action against 1995 world finalist Nigel Bond this morning, while tonight’s crowd will have a treat as they watch legend Jimmy White – now 73rd in the world – attempt to get past world No.33 Gary Wilson.

Crucible champions Ken Doherty and Shaun Murphy will also be in action from 8pm.
