The 10-time Grand Slam champion was playing her first international event since Wimbledon 2017 after becoming a mum for the first time just over a year ago.

And Whiley showed just why she is a former world No.3 by beating Germany’s Katharina Kruger 6-2, 6-4.

Incredibly, things then got even better for the Halesowen star, who went on to add the women’s doubles title to her trophy haul with American partner Dana Mathewson.

Whiley said of her double victory in Wrexham: “Of course I’m not currently ranked and a lot depended on the draw here, but I’ve certainly exceeded my expectations.

“I guess I knew I could win it, but I’ve been training better than I played for some of this week so there’s plenty to work on.

“But I’ve made massive progress with my net play and returns.”

Whiley actually beat doubles partner Mathewson on the way to her singles success. So she said it was nice to team up with her and go on to win the doubles.

“I was probably more nervous for my singles second round against Dana, because I know that in the past we’ve had really strong matches and Dana really challenges me,” she continued. “So it was nice to be on the same side of the net for the doubles.”

Whiley is currently among the top ranked Brits at the Bolton Indoor, which she started yesterday with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Caroline MacDonald.

She added: “I’m really excited for Bolton now as there will be more top 10 players there and it will be a whole new challenge.”
