Jordanne Whiley thrilled to be back on court
Jordanne Whiley has ‘nothing to lose’ when she makes her seasonal bow in the first round of the women’s wheelchair singles at the French Open today.
The Halesowen tennis star is returning from injury at Roland Garros after six months on the sidelines.
She will face Sabine Ellerbrock in the first round before teaming up with Dutch player Diede de Groot in the women’s doubles in Paris.
“It’s been frustrating as my training has been off and on, so I’m really happy and excited I’m able to compete here after missing the Aussie open earlier this year,” said Whiley, the 2015 US Open women’s singles champion and eight-time Grand Slam doubles champion.
“I’m definitely feeling less pressure. I’ve got nothing to lose and I have no real expectations as it’s my first tournament of the year. It’s just good to be competing again.”
Meanwhile, Andy Murray overcame Kei Nishikori in four sets to set up a men’s singles semi-final against Stanislas Wawrinka. Dominic Thiem will play Rafael Nadal in the other semi-final after beating defending champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
