Rio Olympics: Kelly Massey makes debut as Team GB secure place in women's 4x400m final

Kelly Massey admitted it was a case of job done following her Rio 2016 debut that helped Great Britain's women secure a place in the final.

Having only been selected as part of the relay squad in Brazil, Wheaton Aston's Massey had to wait until day 14 of these Olympic Games to show what she is made of.

But she made the most of the opportunity when it was afforded to her as she was chosen to run the third leg in yesterday's heat.

Massey was handed the baton by Anyika Onuora – who in turn received it from Emily Diamond – in second place and duly kept up her end of the bargain by ensuring Great Britain were in the same position by the time Christine Ohuruogu had set off.

And that was the position that Massey and co finished in as double Olympic medallist Ohuruogu came home in a season's best 3:24.81 minutes.

That sees Great Britain through to today's final as the fourth fastest team and Massey insists this is only the beginning.

"It was really good fun," she said. "Obviously we had a job to do which was qualifying for the final and we all did our job very well.

"We wanted to come out here and run strongly and qualify for the final. I think it is easy to think about what we can do in the final, but this was all about just making it.

"Now we can go away, rest up and come back and hopefully perform even better and potentially come away with something.

"It is nice we can smile now but the final is the big one and the one we have been waiting for all season so we have to make sure we get it right."

Like Massey, Onuora was also getting her first taste of the 2016 Olympic Games after she wasn't selected for the individual 400m.

And Onuora explained what a relief it was for her and Massey to finally strut their stuff on the track.

"I have been excited to be here and I finally got my chance to perform," Onuora said.

"I have been watching the team do massively and everyone has done so well and we have all been supporting each other.

"So it was nice to get out and run in the Olympic Stadium. I wasn't too nervous but it was job done and the final is the big one."
